THE sun shone and families filled their day with fun as the big date in Wylam’s social calendar was hailed a huge success.

Wylam Summer Fair returned on Saturday and the village’s Jubilee Field was flooded with activities and attractions for the occasion.

Village and commercial stalls, food outlets and games all kept visitors busy throughout the afternoon.

The annual scarecrow competition was this year replaced with a best dressed welly boot competition, which organisers say attracted some impressive entries.

Meanwhile a tug-of-war brought out the competitive spirits in both adults and youngsters, and egg hoying topped off the day.

Those attending were kept refreshed with a beer tent and Pimms bar, and entertainment was provided in the form of Scottish dancing.

This year’s fair also marked the first day that children could use their brand new skate park and climbing wall on the field.

Organisers said it was estimated that at least 2,000 people turned up to enjoy the fair’s offerings, and while the total of funds raised on the day had not been calculated this week, any money raised will go towards maintaining the playing field.
