A PRUDHOE mum has received backing from fellow councillors to help bring her vision for young people in the town to life.

Coun. Angie Scott took a proposal to last week’s Prudhoe Town Council meeting, asking councillors to use some of the funding available for youth provision on a programme of summer activities.

At the meeting, Coun. Scott said she believed the council could do more to improve the lives of children and families in the town.

“I am a parent of two children, so I know what it’s like in the holidays trying to entertain kids, especially when they would rather be with other kids and you are trying to keep them off technology,” said Coun. Scott.

“Knowing where they are, what they are doing and that they are happy and safe is important, and often they want to be left doing things without their parents.

“There’s also an affordability issue as well, especially in the summer holidays; it’s hard.”

The town council had £25,000 available in its 2018/19 budget for youth provision in Prudhoe, and councillors agreed to use money from this pot to fund activities through the summer holidays.

The council is now asking for youth groups, sports clubs or businesses which could provide programmes of activities, trips or events during the holidays to come forward with ideas. The activities would be free to those using them and would cover all age groups.

The council is asking that the plans complement, rather than compete with, other activities planned in the town, and is proposing that the activities should include a meal for those attending. It is open to considering offers from either one group or a mixture of groups.

Coun. Scott said she was “over the moon” that her proposal had been put into motion.

“I just thought it was great news that the other councillors had supported the idea so the kids will have something to do in the summer holidays,” she said. “It’s really important that this town council is supporting the youth in Prudhoe.”

The council is asking for proposals by 5pm on Tuesday, July 10, so a decision can be made at its meeting on July 11.
