A SEAT and plaque in memory of popular Prudhoe boxer, Scott Westgarth, was unveiled in his hometown on Sunday.

Friends, family and some of Scott's boxing team mates gathered at The Glade in Prudhoe where the seat had been installed to remember the former Prudhoe High School student.

It bears a plaque with Scott's picture on it and a quote from him which reads: "Every fight is a tough test, it's about preparing to achieve, anything is possible."

His mum Rebecca Westgarth, who approached Prudhoe Town Council with the idea for the seat, said: "There were a lot of old school friends and people I have grown up with there, and some of Scotty's friends and family.

"I was pleased there was not a lot of people really because it was quite personal.

"The seat is beautiful and I am so grateful to Prudhoe Town Council; they have really done him proud and it was a lovely day."

The memorial bench was unveiled in time for what would have been Scott's 32nd birthday on Tuesday.

Rebecca said she and other family members had plans to go there to mark his birthday.

Scott died in February this year following the biggest fight of his professional career, an eliminator bout against Dec Spelman in Doncaster.

The former Prudhoe High School pupil took ill shortly after the English light-heavyweight title eliminator, which he won on points, and did not recover.

Following the unveiling, the group gathered at the Fox & Hounds pub on South Road. "When he came home that was his local, so we couldn't have gone anywhere else," said Rebecca. "They put on a lovely spread for us."

The family is continuing to urge people to sign a petition, which calls for all boxing venues to have handheld brain scanners available.

If they reach 10,000 signatures the petition will receive a response from the Government.
