A SILENT soldier which stood at the entrance to Prudhoe to commemorate those who fought in the First World War has been damaged by vandals.

Four of the silent soldier silhouettes, which stand at around 5ft tall, were purchased by Prudhoe Town Council earlier this year to stand at the entrances to the town.

The silent soldier campaign, run by the Royal British Legion, invites councils, individuals and businesses to remember those who fell in The Great War with the soldier silhouettes.

But on Saturday night the soldier at the western gateway to the town was knocked down and damaged beyond repair.

Chairwoman of Prudhoe Town Council Coun. Tracy Gilmore said the damage appeared to have been deliberate, as there were foot marks on the statue.

She said that it appeared to have been kicked over and there were some sharp edges, indicating parts had broken off.

“They were greatly appreciated by the community and people commented on what a lovely thought it was when they were put up,” said Coun. Gilmore.

“Everybody has been quite upset that somebody would go around and do some mindless damage like that. People have commented on how disrespectful it is.”

The soldiers were paid for by Prudhoe Town Council and it has not yet decided if this one will be replaced.

“At the end of the day the people pay for that – that’s what council tax and the precept pay for – and it’s just sad to think that a small number of people have spoiled that for everyone,” said Coun Gilmore.

Northumbria Police said it was aware of the damage and asked anyone with information to get in touch with Prudhoe Neighbourhood Team.
