A DISAPPOINTING summer did nothing to dampen the spirits of Prudhoe’s green fingered community as the annual town show attracted a cornucopia of award-winning produce.

The 51st Prudhoe Town Show took place at the Prudhoe and District United Services Club on Saturday and Sunday.

And once again the two day event saw the venue become a riot of colour and scent as gladioli, dahlias, sweet peas and roses and carnations decorated the room.

The best floral arrangement was won again by Alison Scrimshaw which was a stunning display and keenly bid for in the auction.

And the Millennium Trophy for most points in the floral section went to Peter Hyman who also took the silverware for most points in the rose section.

The recent addition of fruit and vegetable creature in the junior section, featuring a courgette sea monster and a spider made from grapes, proved popular with entrants and spectators alike.

Best overall exhibit in the junior section was awarded to Anna Hodgson for her three dimensional model of owls in a tree.

In addition there was the usual incredible mouthwatering range of cakes, pies, biscuits, preserves and chutneys which was a pleasurable challenge for the judges.

It was an especially good year for Jean Phillips who won the Prudhoe Town Show cup for the most points in the show once more.

And the Hexham Courant Tynedale Trophy for handicrafts was won by Rosemary Kenyon.

Soil scientist Dr Julia Cooper was on hand to offer advice to gardeners on fertilisers and other soil products to help them get the best from their allotments and gardens.

The event is well supported by the local community, with Salem Tubes, SCA Hygiene, Thompsons of Prudhoe, Witton Ness, J. Hardy Carpets, GMS, Northumbrian Roads, The Stationery Shop and Prudhoe Carpets all named as sponsors. And many of the town’s shops donated items for the raffle, which featured 50 prizes this year.

Mayor of Prudhoe Eileen Burt was on hand to meet the exhibitors and hand out prizes and praised the hard work of all those who volunteered to make the show happen and for all those who entered.
