A TYNEDALE community has rallied together to revive its village fair after 30 years of absence.

St Mary’s Church, Friends of Stamfordham Play Park and Stamfordham Cricket Club have joined forces to bring back a once much-loved village fair that used to take place every August Bank Holiday Monday.

Monday, August 29 will see the fair return to Stamfordham village green from 1-4pm.

The fair will include a classic car show, cake competition, pony rides, stalls, cream tea, teddy bear parachutes from the church tower and much more.

Raffle prizes include a round of golf for four at Matfen Hall, tea for two at Vallum, beauty treatments and a photography session with Oliver’s Photography.

There is also a scarecrow competition for which the villagers are already getting quite competitive.

James Freeman-Griffith from Stamfordham Cricket Club was keen for the old tradition to be revived for the next generation.

The Rev. Rachel Scheffer at St Mary’s Church said: “It has been wonderful to see the community coming together with several different groups planning the event.

“We have tried to keep up the traditional theme of the old fair but with a modern twist.

“I’m a vicar who lives my ministry out of the community so when James came to me with the idea I went with it.”

There has been a positive reaction to the fair’s resurgence, with people commenting on the Facebook page, chatting in the pub and planning their scarecrows for the competition.
