STUDENTS at Ponteland High School delved into the human brain as part of a project with Newcastle University.

As part of The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme, year 10 students worked with a PhD tutor on the programme called, Delving into the Human Brain: What can brain scientists tell us about our brain?

The Scholars Programme is designed to help pupils develop the knowledge, skills and ambition needed to support them going on to university.

During the programme, they were fortunate enough to be able to witness an MRI scan and visit university labs and research facilities.

Dr Natalie Day, Scholars Club regional manager, said: “It has been a real pleasure working with pupils from Ponteland High School. Students have worked very hard and have shown high levels of commitment and engagement with the programme.

“The pupils have all done incredibly well, outperforming both regional and national averages.”

At the end of the programme students wrote a final assignment on the topic, testing their knowledge and also enhancing the skills needed for future exams and essays.

Five students were awarded a first for their final assignment and all students were recognised at a graduation event which took place at Durham University.

Mr Rob Shuttleworth, assistant headteacher, said: “This has been a really enjoyable experience for our students, which has stretched them academically.”
