A MECHANIC from Stamfordham is planning to test his 1982 Triumph TR7 to the limit by attempting to complete a 2,000-mile trip in just 48 hours.

But Stuart Wilson is no stranger to the non-stop fund-raising challenge, which follows a route from London to John O’Groats to Land’s End and back to London.

He and fellow Hexham & District Motor Club member, Chris Purvis (48) first completed the Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run in 2012, but failed to finish when disaster struck during their second attempt in 2014.

“We were in a Moss Roadster kit car, which is based on a 1965 Triumph Herald, and the engine just stopped working,” said Stuart (46).

“But I bought the TR7 specially for the trip in 2012 and we did it then – so we can do it again!”

The pair will be taking turns to drive the TR7 when the biennial event begins on Friday.

“There’s something about Triumph cars which has always stood out for me,” said Stuart.

“They’re British and they’re affordable so what’s not to like?”

The aim of this year’s event, which will be the 25th running of one of the oldest events in the Triumph enthusiasts calendar, is to raise £50,000 for the charity Guide Dogs.

Stuart and Chris have a personal target of £500 and donations can be pledged online at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/StuartWilsonChrisPurvis
