PONTELAND’S fourth annual beer festival last weekend attracted record crowds who enjoyed the food, drink and entertainment on offer.

This year’s festival looked to be so popular that organisers, Ponteland Rugby Club, extended it to a three-day weekend event.

A total of 3,200 people flocked to the two marquees alongside the rugby pitch at Ponteland Leisure Centre across Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday alone attracting 2,000 people.

Those who attended could sample more than 100 beers and lagers on offer as well as 50 ciders, wines, Prosecco and soft drinks. This year also had the debut of a gin bar. Food was provided courtesy of the famous Longhorns Barbecue Smokehouse, and local musicians provided the entertainment.

This year’s beer festival was a special one, as it also formed part of the celebrations for Ponteland Rugby Club’s 50th anniversary. On Saturday afternoon, Ponteland Rugby Club’s First XV played against Seaton Carew, with a victorious score of 111 to 3.

Organiser Andy Maidwell said: “We were very well supported. It was a great club event which was our way of being able to work with our local community and provide an event the whole community can benefit from.”
