PONTELAND Parish Flower Show returned with plenty of colouful produce for its 39th year.

Despite bad weather the weekend before the show damaging many of the flower entries, chairman Syd Cowan said that overall, the submissions were of a very high standard.

Mr Cowan said: “The show went very well.

“There was a large attendance and a lot of familiar faces, but one thing that stood out was the number of new entrants, most of whom went on to win prizes.

“It’s unfortunate that the weather destroyed so many of the flower entries.

“What people had taken their time to grow to show off had been ruined.

“But the rest of the entries more than made up for it.”

The show took place on Saturday, September 10, at Ponteland Memorial Hall on Darras Road.

Entries were submitted in the morning, with the show open to the public from 1pm and a presentation of awards at 4pm.

Mr Cowan said that one notable winner was Bob Butcher, who had been absent in 2015 due to illness, but returned this year.

He said: “The vegetable category was greatly enhanced by his entries and he won prizes in a number of sections.”

The show had 131 classes in total, in a range of categories including flowers, vegetables, fruit, cookery, handicrafts, wine and spirits and a children’s section.

Mr Cowan also submitted a number of entries himself, winning first prize in the marmalade and chutney class.

He added: “A great day was had by all which finished off with an auction and raffle organised by our volunteer committee, to help raise funds for the show.”
