The proposals have beeen put forward by Northumberland County Council, with consultations due to end this week.
The extended speed limit is intended to begin just before the junction that leads to Jameson Field housing estate, and will continue on to join the existing 30mph limit further down North Road.
Jeanette Dodd of Ponteland Town Council said: “The idea for the speed limit extension came after residents of Jameson Field estate complained of being unable to get out of the junction onto North Road because of the speed of the passing vehicles.
“The town council raised the issue and Northumberland County Council took it on board.
“Councillors, particularly those in the north of the ward, are happy to see that residents in Ponteland are kept safe.
“We feel that cars shouldn’t be doing 60mph past a housing estate and it is not possible for residents to be able to get out safely. We hope that if these proposals go through it will make the road safer for everyone.”
A speed indicator sign has been installed on the bend on North Road within the 30mph limit, aiming to slow drivers.
