Last year, the county council announced plans to move the library to the town’s leisure centre.
The proposal was met by widespread outrage, with many arguing the move was a plan to axe the service by degrees by moving it to a less accessible location.
However, Ponteland Town Council has been working on a possible solution.
The council is keen to find new offices and has been looking into the potential to share any new premises with the library service to retain the facility within the town centre.
However, information from Northumberland County Council chief executive, Steven Mason suggests that the library move will go ahead.
At last week’s meeting of the town council, Coun. Peter Cowey related the outcome of his meeting with Mr Mason.
He said: “The response was that he wasn’t prepared to talk about the library staying where it is. He said that it will move to the leisure centre.
“But if that doesn’t work out, he hasn’t ruled out moving it back.
“He said it would be moved in June and he hasn’t ruled out anything after that.”
