THE HISTORY of Newcastle’s Grainger Market will be uncovered during a talk at St Mary’s Church Hall in Ponteland next Monday.

City guide Freda Thompson will give a talk entitled Mr Grainger’s Market at the meeting of Ponteland Civic Society at 7.30pm.

In her talk, she will explain how builder Richard Grainger enlisted the help of John Dobson following his observations in the city.

Their story then takes them to the building of the covered market, which opened in 1835 and is still in use today, commonly known as The Grainger Market.

Members of the public are invited to attend the talk, for which there is a small fee of £2. It will close with cups of tea and the opportunity for discussion.
