RESIDENTS in West Tynedale are being reminded to keep their homes secure as the police force’s crackdown on burglary continues.

Most burglars are opportunist and take advantage of doors and windows being left open, in particular during the summer months, when people are more likely to be outside - thieves see an open door and take a chance the house is empty, or that they can sneak in without being noticed.

Installing effective security measures can act as a deterrent and help prevent the property being targeted and can be as simple as locking front and back doors and making sure windows are closed when the room is empty, particularly overnight.
