A BODY has been pulled from a Tyne Valley reservoir.

Police believe the man's car smashed through a fence at Whittle Dene Reservoir, near Horsley.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "At about 9.30am on Thursday, police received a report of concern after a member of the public saw a damaged fence and vehicle debris located near to Whittle Dene Reservoir.
"Enquiries revealed that a vehicle may have entered the lake at that location.

"Emergency services attended the scene and sadly the body of a man was recovered from the vehicle.

"Enquiries are being made to inform next of kin and they will be supported by specialist officers at this difficult time.

"A report will now been prepared for the coroner."

The incident happened off the Military Road, with the road closed at the Stamfordham junction.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We dispatched a rapid response paramedic, a double crewed ambulance, and four Hazardous Area Response Teams."

The fire service also attended to support the police and ambulance services.

Two crews attended from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, including the Swift Water Rescue Team which was deployed from Hexham.
A crew from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service was also at the scene.

Formal identification of the body is yet to take place.
