Humshaugh news

A LOT of our community were stricken with grief and shock last Monday on hearing the tragic news of the death of Susan (Sue) Washington and her daughter Katie, who were both killed in a motor accident on the Military Road between Stagshaw and Chollerford the day before.
The Washington family have always been very popular residents in our community. Susan became involved in many community matters including being ‘first-aider’ at the annual fireworks display and at Humshaugh school, both over very many years.
THE pub quiz last week was a great success, with nearly £200 raised for the pre-school and Humshaugh School.
Thanks go to Louise Armitage, Lucy Siddle and head teacher Angela Steele for so successfully organising this event with great support from the parents and Friends of the School who provided what must have been the largest display ever of raffle prizes and winners prizes. The winning team was made up of Slim, Nicky, Tim and Ian.
LAST Saturday there was a very special event at Wark Town Hall. It was a presentation of awards to long-serving supporters of the Royal British Legion in this part of the North Tyne Valley.
The event was honoured by the presence of the Duchess of Northumberland who gave the awards. In the case of Humshaugh, the awards for unstinting work over long periods of time went to Bettine Main, Mary Gibson, Joy Taylor, Liliane Steele, Barry Roxburgh and Humshaugh School.
LAST week’s notes referred to Mrs Jane Wild and it is especially sad now to report her death last Saturday.
She was 96 years old, hailed originally from Sunderland, but moved to Chollerton and into the Station House when her husband became involved in the Barrasford office of Northumberland Estates.
She moved to Humshaugh about 25 years ago following the death of her late husband and lived in South View for most of that time, moving to Orchard View a few years ago. She was a great supporter of St Peter’s Church. Her funeral service will take place at Chollerton Parish Church tomorrow (Saturday) at 2.30pm.
THE Ofsted inspection carried out at Humshaugh School has returned a verdict of ‘good’ with a number of outstanding features. This inspection will be followed by an inspection by the Church of England, and it is hoped to report on this in due course.
THE playing field trustees have been conscious for some time of insufficient play equipment for four to 10-year-olds and so have installed a climbing frame with a slide for this age group.
Judging by the use of it so far, it seems extremely popular. It was part-funded by the Evans Trust to which we are very grateful, and also from the playing field trust’s own funds. We now face quite strict regulations about the playing field equipment so improvements have been carried out to the mobile chicken.
