Chaos on ice-bound A69

SUB-ZERO temperatures plunged Tynedale’s roads back into chaos this week.

Black ice on the A69 resulted in a number of separate accidents on Wednesday morning, and caused huge delays for rush hour traffic.

On the westbound carriageway, just past the Corbridge turn-off, a Toyota Yaris flipped on to its side, and 100 yards away, a Nissan Micra and Ford Ka also collided.

On the A69 at Horsley a Land Rover also travelling west flipped on to its roof after hitting the central reservation, and a Vauxhall Corsa travelling east, skidded into the reservation.

Minor injuries were reported but no-one was taken to hospital for treatment.

The police were able to keep both carriageways open, but traffic flow was seriously disrupted.

East Tynedale neighbourhood inspector Kevin Oates warned motorists to be wary of the freezing conditions.

He said: “Although the snow has melted, people should not be complacent because there is still a real risk of ice and frost on the roads.”
