Newbrough news

AN APOLOGY regarding one of the events mentioned in the notes last week – the Sun Walk, due to take place a week past Sunday, was cancelled due to the bad weather.

I have been asked to request that the money given in sponsorship by some people prior to that event be kept for the rescheduled date. Many thanks.

FRIDAY proved to be quite a day for accidents on the Mossy Bank. During the afternoon an accident caused the road to be closed for a considerable time and then later in the evening another accident closed the road again.

AT THE Town Hall on Friday evening the Reminiscence event proved to be very interesting and a good laugh.  The chair was taken by George Shaw and he invited Doreen Dodd, Laura Watson, Winnie Dixon and Billy Charlton to tell stories about the villages, people, work and hobbies during their lifetime.

It would appear there were a lot of characters around in the “good old days” and that life was hard but enjoyable.

Moving to properties with electricity was a novel thing to do, even though you could only use a light and nothing else; running water was a luxury.

Despite all the modern gadgets nowadays, many of us still aren’t happy, and I wonder if we could cope as well as our grandparents and great grandparents did if we went back in time? I don’t think so.

WITH the previous event in mind, I was asked to mention in the notes that one or two people would like to start up a local history society.  If anyone is interested in looking into the history of the villages then please watch out for details in the Stanegate Magazine.

A COFFEE morning will be held today in Fourstones with Warden Methodist Church from 10am until noon. Proceeds are for Christian Aid. Everyone is invited.

A cup of tea could help change the world.

THEY say that we are never more than a few feet from a rat at all times of the day and this has been proved quite recently. Many of the youngsters are having great fun climbing and playing around the tree next to the east end of Sidgate.

It is obvious how much pleasure they get by the laughter you can hear as you pass, but please parents be warned. During the last couple of weeks there have been quite a few rats seen running and digging in the same area.

As the corn has been cut, these creatures are obviously more visible when the area goes quiet and a local resident has suggested that, as rats can spread disease, the fact that they have been spotted again should perhaps be noted so that you can ensure your children wash their hands, etc after playing out and about.
