THE Acomb wives’ group joined the Women’s Institute at its meeting last Wednesday. Together they enjoyed a talk about the history of Waitrose supermarket and its charitable foundation.
After the talk the group enjoyed sampling wine and nibbles. Ann Woodcock, Pauline Rayson and Aileen Wilkinson each took home a flowering pot plant, having won the month’s competition.
JUDGING has taken place for Acomb in Bloom. The judges said they were very pleased with what they saw, and the winners will be announced later next month.
MEMBERS of St John Lee, Warden with Newbrough and Haltwhistle parishes spent last Saturday at Alnmouth Friary for the annual parish quiet day.
The group appreciated the warmth and spiritual depth with which Canon Raymond Best, vicar of Haltwhistle, led the day. Another highlight was an inspiring service in the chapel, which opens to the garden and enjoys a stunning view of the coast, with the Alnmouth brothers and other guests.
The weather was mostly kind, which gave an opportunity to get to know one another over sandwiches in the garden.
PARISH council members will make a site visit to Chapel Close on Wednesday, September 3, at the start of its meeting. Residents of the close have expressed concern about trees blocking the road. The matter will then be discussed at the meeting.
Also on the agenda will be a preliminary discussion about development of the green, and the use of Coun. Terry Robson’s budget for local improvements.
As always, the meeting is open to the public to attend as observers. It will start with the site visit at 7pm and then move to the village hall.
THE embroiderers’ guild has booked the village hall this weekend for a workshop with an African theme. Members will create new art works during the weekend, and anyone interested is invited to drop in between 10am and 4pm tomorrow or Sunday to have a look. The guild welcomes new members.
