Acomb news

OUR hearts go out to the residents of Morrison Terrace who endured the trauma of a flood from the Red Burn last Thursday.

The burn burst its banks opposite Cross Bank View and was soon a torrent flowing down Main Street, down the back lane and through the gardens of Morrison Terrace.
Thanks to the prompt action of the emergency services the houses were not damaged severely, but several lovingly tended gardens were ruined. There were reports of doors and fencing panels swept away in the flood, and the bottom of Main Street was blocked until dusk.

THE St John Lee branch of the Mothers’ Union is to close at the end of the year, after 70 years’ service. It is unable to continue with such a small membership.
The Mothers’ Union has a proud history in the village and for many years has been providing emergency toilet bags for patients at Hexham General Hospital, as well as raising money for charity.
At their final meeting in July, members enjoyed a visit to the gardens at The Riding by invitation of Major Charles and Tina Enderby.
Lay reader Chris Sayers led the prayers and the group thanked him for his support over the years. They enjoyed tea and good company following a walk in the garden.

HE parish council requests donations of books for a sale in early September. Please take them to the village hall between 10.15am and 2.45pm on a Monday, or phone Bill Grigg on (01434) 634397 to arrange collection.
The proceeds of the sale will go towards village hall running costs.

THE interregnum (period without at rector) is nearly at an end at St John Lee. The new rector, the Rev. Jeremy Thompson, will make his first appearance at his institution and induction service on September 2.
Mr Thompson, like his predecessor, the Rev. Roger Cutler, will serve the parishes of St John Lee and Warden with Newbrough.
