Carnival makes welcome return

AFTER a year’s delay, the children of Bardon Mill are eagerly anticipating the return of one of the village’s popular events.
Bardon Mill Children’s Carnival will be held at the cricket field between 2 - 4pm tomorrow.
Last year’s event was cancelled due to the lack of help being provided to organise the fun day.
Villagers have stepped in with their support to make sure the carnival remains an annual fixture in Bardon Mill.
Carnvial chairman Lesley Cuthbert said: “We have had a year without a carnival and several people, especially the children, have said they really have missed having a carnival.
“A few people have come forward to help and hopefully it will be a great success.”
During the day a mini procession will be held featuring carnival queen Beth Jameson and her four attendants, Ella Moore-Hughes, Elise Geddes, Imogen Partington and Nia Oselton.
A five-a-side football competition for those aged 11 or under will take place no matter what the weather.
A young local magician and a fancy dress competition will keep the carnival guests entertained.
A children’s baking competition will be introduced at this year’s event, with youngsters having the choice to cook scones or buns.
However, some familiar sights of the past will not be seen at this year’s carnival.
A big procession cannot take place because of problems with road closures, and the children’s rides will be absent due to an over-booking.
Lesley Cuthbert added: “We have tried to put together just a basic carnival after it had to be cancelled last year, to see what the interest is and see how it goes this year.
“It has regained interest and hopefully we will get more help and have something slightly bigger next year.”
