A HEXHAM newsagent has backed a Courant campaign which calls on Northumberland County Council to restart the publication of statutory notices in the paper with immediate effect.

Ed Green, who manages Peggs News on Priestpopple and Cookes News on Meal Market has criticised the decision, which has seen the council now paying to publish information on road closures and planning matters in a newspaper based more than 50 miles away in Alnwick.

“It’s a disgrace. How are people supposed to know what’s going on?” said Mr Green.

“I sell two or three copies of the Gazette and 1,200 of the Courant between Hexham and Acomb.

“I was told I had to place a notice in the Courant when I was applying for an alcohol licence for the two shops.

“So are the council changing that now as well and telling people to place them in the Northumberland Gazette?”
