BARRASFORD villagers are celebrating a victory after their concerns about speeding traffic in the village were addressed.

Maggie Tarbit, who works part-time in the village shop, started a petition earlier this year after residents were concerned about vehicles travelling at well over the 30mph limit on the main road through the village.

The petition gathered 80 signatures from residents concerned that, with a children’s playground on one side of the road and the village shop on the other, children were being put at risk by the speeding vehicles.

At a meeting of Tynedale Local Area Council last Tuesday, petitioners were told by Northumberland County Council officers that a speed survey would be carried out in the village.

They were also told that a 20mph limit could be considered, in line with the council’s policy of introducing 20mph limits outside schools.

It was noted that if such a scheme was to go ahead, it would be included in the 2018/19 Local Transport Plan.

County councillor for the Humshaugh ward, Coun. Rupert Gibson, said: “I think this is exactly what we wanted.”

Speaking after the meeting, Mrs Tarbit said: “So far it is very positive news. This is a historic thing that people have been asking for and it’s good that it’s taken a step forward.”
