THE funeral took place last week of a well-known architect, local politician and community stalwart who died aged 83.

Born in Leeds, Don Jowett followed a career in architecture, which brought him, his wife Shirley and their two sons to settle in Hexham.

Don joined an architectural practice in Newcastle and then formed the Jowett, Buckley and Curry Partnership which became one of the most respected architectural practices in the region, with offices in Newcastle and Hexham.

They were responsible for designing the Co-op in Maiden’s Walk, now Marks & Spencer, as well as the extension to Robbs store, the housing at Tanners Row and Cockshaw Court, Hexham ambulance station and the retirement flats at Pudding Mews.

The move to Hexham prompted a career in politics, and Don was first elected to Northumberland County Council to represent Hexham East in May 1977. After losing his seat in 1981, he was re-elected to serve Hexham West in 1989 until 2001.

He was a member of Tynedale District Council for five years from 1983 and was made vice-chairman, and was also elected to Hexham Town Council and served two years as mayor.

He played an active role in the community and was founder president of Tynedale Rotary Club. He had a love for amateur dramatics and in particular was involved with Hexham Amateur Stage Society.

Following his retirement, he and wife Shirley continued to be involved in Hexham West End Methodist Church, while he enjoyed golf, gardening and reading.

After falling ill after Christmas, Don was diagnosed with cancer and died at home on April 9.

He leaves behind Shirley, their two children Martin and Robin and their five grandchildren.

A private service and cremation was followed by a service of thanksgiving at Hexham West End Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 25.

Mrs Jowett said: “There were representatives there from everything he had been involved in and it was a lovely service.

“It’s amazing how well he was known and thought of. I have a big box of cards and letters with lovely words about him.

“He was a very caring husband and father.”
