CLASHES with the Morpeth Gathering and other events across the county did not stop visitors flocking to Hexham’s annual Spring Festival on Saturday.

The sun shone on the town and more stalls than ever filled the Abbey Grounds – despite the absence this year of the Morris and Maypole dancers who found themselves otherwise engaged.

With its live music, animal attractions and a parade of more than 300 Scouts, the event, organised by Hexham Community Partnership, brought thousands of visitors into the town centre and was hailed a resounding success.

“We were really lucky with the weather; I think it was as warm as could be expected for this time of year,” said Marion Schooler, manager of the community partnership.

“We tried a few new things this time around, like changing the layout a bit and creating a food and dining area just as people came into the Abbey Grounds.

“There was such a nice atmosphere.”

Local groups, bands and choirs, including A Batida Da Rua, performed throughout the day while visitors browsed more than 50 stalls.

Dog owners could test their agility along with their four-legged friends, while a display of birds from Falconry Days in Simonburn and Jersey calves from Wheelbirks kept younger visitors entertained.

A parade of Scouts and Guides from all over the North-East, which had gathered in Hexham to mark St George’s Day weekend, provided a colourful interlude, featuring young and old.

“Among the highlights for me was the Samba band and the birds of prey,” said Marion.

“The event keeps growing and we try to keep the theme centred around all things spring, as well as rural crafts and traditional skills.

“But we couldn’t put the event on without the help we receive from volunteers.

“This year, we had a group from Egger join us and they were brilliant.

“They turned out at 5am to help us put up stalls and were there again at the end of the day to help take them down.

“There must have been well over 20 people helping us on the day. They help with all of the logistics, from directing visitors to tidying up – and we could always do with more!”
