A PAIR of smash-and-grab raiders who snatched £4,000 in jewellery and watches from Hexham stores have been handed community orders.

Daniel Gray and Steven Dodd struck at two town centre jewellers in the early morning of December 2.

Ashley Matthews Jewellers and David Newman Watch and Clock Repairs were both targeted in the raid.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Friday, February 17.

The first store targeted was David Newman Watch and Clock Repairs on St Mary’s Chare. Wristwatches, pocket watches, clocks, cutlery and jewellery were stolen via smashed window.

The duo then moved on to Ashley Matthews Jewellers at Hexham Market Place. This time 22 Citizen wrist watches were taken via a smashed window at the store

Gray (32) and Dodd (32) were arrested at their Hexham homes where police found the stolen goods. Gray, of Rede Avenue, was handed a 12-month community order and made to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work. At a separate sentencing hearing on Wednesday, February 22, Dodds, of Bondgate Close, was given a 12-month community order.
