THE 156th Slaley Show is not far away now, and entries are being received. So read your schedule, and start putting in more entries to spread the load on the secretaries.

The weather has plenty of time to dry and warm up for the big day.

THE Rose and Crown now has a new head chef, Darren Clark: why not call in and welcome him to Slaley?

The pub also hosted a wine tasting last Saturday. It was a very enjoyable afternoon learning and tasting wines from Alsace, Australia, Germany and New Zealand, all made from the Riesling grapes.

There was a suggestion of another tasting event later this year. Anyone interested should watch this space for further news.

A HUGE thank you from Ladycross Nature Reserve to the small band of volunteers who worked so hard at sorting out the footpaths.

They were so good that further work isn’t needed for tomorrow.

A reminder also that the next nightjar walk is on Thursday, August 6, at 9pm. Book with Joan Jewitt – please telephone (01434) 673245, giving your telephone number, and in case of last minute changes; also say how many are coming.

This nightjar walk is an experience not to be missed, and a lovely treat for any visitors you might have, as nightjars have a unique call.

Also, a reminder of their open day on Saturday, August 15, – no need to book – just turn up. They hope it will be a big fund-raiser to allow them to proceed with the container conversion to a classroom/meeting room.

THE Minsteracres Retreat Centre and the Stocksfield South Tyne Flower Club are putting on a flower show this weekend, with lots to hear, see and do.

The festival will be officially opened by Paul Mooney, and the designer is our own Vivien Bolton, holder of seven gold awards.

THE medicine run volunteer for the next week is Jackie Anton.
