MIDDLE schools from Tynedale have triumphed in an international competition designed to test the literary knowledge of 10 to 13 year olds.

Teams of four students from Hexham Middle School, Corbridge Middle School and St Joseph’s Middle School in Hexham made up the top three best performers at the North-East regional finals of the annual Kids’ Lit Quiz.

But it was the team from St Joseph’s who were crowned overall winners after answering 100 quick-fire questions on everything from stories and their authors to characters and plot details.

Key Stage Two coordinator at St Joseph’s, Kirsten Coulson, said: “The whole idea of the competition is that it is a celebration of the sport of reading and how it challenges the brain.

“The team did so well to get through all the questions which were split into categories like accidents, symbols, rats and mice and nursery rhymes.”

Year eight students Mathilde Hill Blaske, Kyle Flotildas, Kai Barber and Finlay Wyatt are now headed to the national finals at Oxford Town Hall after answering the most correct questions at the regional heat held on November 3 at Gosforth Central Middle School in Newcastle.

Their regional win has already bagged the students a 12-month membership to Newcastle’s Lit and Phil, as well as book vouchers.

And each team will be using buzzers in the battle to clinch the national title on December 4.

Since it began in 1991, the Kids’ Lit Quiz has spread across the world, with national competitions being held in New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, the USA, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong, as well as the UK.

The world final will be held in New Zealand next August.
