Planning permission is being sought to change the use of first floor premises at number 10a, Market Place, from office to retail to allow for a tobacconist/vaporium with associated cafe/lounge.
The proposal has been put forward by Hexham’s Daniel Kirkland for the premises above optician Geoff Steven and Son, which are understood to have been empty since January.
It is hoped the new business could create one full-time and two part-time jobs.
The proposed opening hours are between 7am and 10pm, Monday to Friday, 7am and 11pm each Saturday and 8am until 10pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Hexham Town Council has objected to the idea on the grounds of access, which would be via a stairway, which councillors say has health and safety implications.
The council also raised concerns about the impact on neighbouring residential properties.
Three members of the public have commented on the application – two of which have been lodged as objections from nearby businesses.
The application is yet to be considered by Northumberland County Council.
