WORK on a £1.5m scheme to create a new wedding venue in Hexham is said to be in its final stages.

Northumberland County Council has announced that the restoration of Hexham House is on track and the Grade II listed building will be opened to the public in September.

A series of open evenings has been planned for later this summer so couples planning to get married can view the venue and meet members of the council’s wedding co-ordination team.

The landmark building is undergoing a major facelift to convert it into a wedding complex, with a new register office, two wedding ceremony rooms and seven luxury self-catering holiday apartments, complete with bridal suite.

The full upgrade to the interior of the building on Gilesgate began in November with contractors Compass Developments making every effort to ensure the work is in keeping with the heritage of the 18th century house.

The building, which boasts views over Hexham Abbey and award-winning parks, was once the headquarters of Hexham Urban Council and then Tynedale Council, but has not been in regular use since local government reorganisation in 2009.

County councillor Nick Oliver, cabinet member for corporate services, said: “The redevelopment of Hexham House is a really exciting opportunity, both for people planning to get married and the town itself.

“It is set to be one of the finest register offices in the North of England and will provide a great opportunity for couples who are looking for an elegant setting that is also great value for money.”

Hexham House will not provide reception facilities and couples will be encouraged to contact local providers.

The first couple to be married at the venue in September have chosen nearby Hexham Abbey for their reception and evening function.
