HUNDREDS of people have taken part in a public consultation on the regeneration of Hexham Market Place.

Residents, traders, workers and shoppers have had their say on how the historic heart of the town should look via a series of public events and an engagement website which ran throughout the summer.

Now, with the first stage of consultation closed, officials from sustainable transport charity Sustrans, plan to spend the winter analysing the feedback and traffic data they have collected.

A series of design options will then be drawn up and presented for further public comment in the spring.

“We are very pleased with the level of engagement,” said Kieran McSherry, senior urban designer at Sustrans.

“There have been hundreds of comments on our website and we’ve met hundreds of people at our stalls and public events, the challenge now is to turn all those ideas into designs.”

Hexham Town Council and Northumberland County Council appointed Sustrans to head up the project.

Stalls in Hexham Market Place and a public meeting helped designers collect ideas.

As well as this they set up a website for people to post their ideas, comments and suggestions of what to change, and what not to change, about this part of Hexham.

“Get rid of the parking. It is not needed. It ruins a great public space...” was the feddback from one participant on the website.

“Freshen up the Market Place but leave the layout as it is now. The town can not afford to lose more parking,” was another view.

The engagement website is still open for viewing but commenting has now closed.
