HEXHAM’S MP Guy Opperman has welcomed a Government pledge to plough an extra £1.3bn into schools across England over the next two years.
Education Secretary Justine Greening said the “significant investment” would help to “raise standards, promote social mobility and to give every child the best possible education”.
Mr Opperman responded: “I have long been committed to ending the poor funding our local schools have received for decades.
“This is another step in the right direction for our campaign, ensuring that our children receive the education they deserve, wherever they live.
“This announcement sends a clear message that the Government has listened to us and is committed to giving every child the best possible education and the best opportunities for their future.
“As a long-time campaigner for fairer funding for schools I really do welcome this as a real step in the right direction.”
Projections suggest that with the Government’s new guarantee, funding per pupil will increase by at least £255 in Northumberland, added Mr Opperman.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies said it represents a real-terms freeze on school budgets for the next two years.
