HUNDREDS of entries for the annual Hexhamshire Leek Club Horticultural and Industrial Exhibition filled Whitley Chapel Parish Hall on Saturday.

The event is one of the highlights of the Shire community calendar and each year draws competitors in their droves.

“It was our 54th show and went very well,” said secretary John Henderson.

“We work closely with Whitley Chapel First School each year to try and agree on some classes which fit with the curriculum.

“It seems to work because we have over 80 entries from the school this year.”

Lego models of Greek temples and clay model animals took their place among 463 entries in total.

The show has around 110 classes which cover fruit, vegetables, flowers, photography, industrial and art.

But it was show regular Bob Bennett who triumphed to take the top prize of the Bernard Baxter Quaich for the best pair of leeks.

Hexham’s Brenda Carr took the cup for the best single leek in show and newcomer Jackie Rees, took the new member’s trophy for best leek.

“In total, 58 leek club members benched leeks, so it was a very successful day,” said John.
