A HEXHAM man who has dedicated over 25 years to raising money for two service charities has been recognised for his achievements.

Nick Short (82) has collected money for the RAF Wings Appeal, which supports serving and former RAF personnel and their families, and the Royal British Legion over the decades.

Mr Short was sent a Hexham Constituency Community Champion Award, which recognises extraordinary charitable, community, educational, business and sporting achievements across the constituency, by Hexham’s MP Guy Opperman last week.

“I was very surprised,” said Mr Short. “Especially when I got a brown envelope from the House of Commons through my door; I didn’t know what to expect.

“I did my RAF service in 1953, so I think it’s important that I collect for people who need a bit of help. I just hope that what I have collected has gone to do something good.

“I get fantastic support from people when I’m out collecting and that’s what it’s all about – it exceeds all expectations.”

The Community Champion Awards were launched in June, with certificates awarded on a monthly basis.

Some recipients will later be invited to attend an annual event at the House of Commons.
