A MUSICIAN who has dedicated his career to teaching youngsters across Tynedale has become the 16th honorary steward and bailiff of Hexham.

After 22 years as orchestra and brass co-ordinator with Northumberland County Music Service, Dave Hignett is now a freelance conductor, performer and teacher at The Royal Grammar School, Dame Allan’s and Newcastle High School for Girls.

He also teaches at Hexham Middle School, Queen Elizabeth High School and leads two orchestras at St Joseph’s Middle School in Hexham.

He was presented with the awards in recognition of his service to the community at the annual spring reception held by Hexham Town Council.

At the event, held at the town’s Beaumont Hotel, Mayor of Hexham Coun. Trevor Cessford told guests that, following the success of the Tyne Valley Big Band, Dave has collaborated with Core Music and the Queen’s Hall to form the Tyne Valley Jazz Ensemble for 10 to 13-year-olds, and the Tyne Valley Youth Big Band for 13 to 18-year-olds.

Dave said: “It’s a great honour to get this recognition but it’s not just about me because I’ve been very lucky to have had the opportunities I’ve had over the years.”
