HEXHAM Priory School is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.
The supermarket has teamed up with Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative, which sees grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and green space projects.
The cash awarded to the school will be used to develop an outdoor forest school area, aimed at increasing confidence through hands-on learning experiences.
The space, which is currently a blank canvas full of mature sycamore trees and protected by a willow fence, will be used by the children for outdoor activities and lighting fires.
Sarah Nixon, head of the school’s primary department, explained: “All our children have significant learning difficulties, therefore we need to create a safe, stimulating and exciting learning environment.”
The key feature of the forest school will be a Mongolian Yurt with a wood burning stove inside to ensure the space can be used all year round.
Voting opens to customers in Hexham’s Tesco store on October 31 and runs until November 13.
