HAVING harvested a glut of their finest produce, gardeners headed for Acomb earlier this month.

The community pulled out all the stops for the annual Acomb Floral, Horticultural and Industrial Society show, with the village hall at the centre of the action.

As well as revealing who had grown this year’s best and worst leeks, there were prizes awarded in more than 100 other categories, and a big raffle.

This year, the prize for best leeks in show – the Richardson Cup and Chadwick Shield – went to Emma Watson.

Acomb First School had a very good turn out of entries, with youngsters producing some eye- catching pieces of work.

The day ended with a raffle and auction of flowers and produce.

“There was a good turn out when the doors opened in the afternoon, when eager participants came to see how they had got on and to marvel at other people’s efforts,” said Anna Gray, the society’s secretary.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to the judges, who come each year, and to everyone who helps on the day and those who grow, make and produce throughout the year to help make our show a success.”

The society always welcomes new members.
