A GROUP of motoring enthusiasts are going on a fund-raising drive to save a famous Cumbrian cafe.

More than 250 people look set to make the journey from Hexham to Hartside Cafe on Sunday.

The cafe was destroyed by a fire last week but owners have said they are determined to rebuild.

Organisers Davey Tee and Mickey Cowen have suggested that everyone taking part donates just a few pounds to help the cafe rebuild.

Davey said: “I’m part of a group called the Great North Air Ambulance Car Cruise North East.

“The cafe has let us and other groups use their car park for events in the past and we wanted to give something back.

“We’ve told the police to expect 50 plus people but there’s over 250 people saying they’re going on Facebook and 1,400 people have clicked interested.

“You get some people saying ‘oh but the insurance will sort it’ but what about the staff? They’ve got nothing left.

“The scenery is amazing and the staff are always great.

“People love it, you have stories of people saying they met their wife up there or had their first date.”

Up to eight car and bike groups will be taking part in the drive, with Cumbrian drivers group meeting at the summit of the mountain.

A Just Giving page has also been set up to raise money for the cafe’s rebuild, with almost £1,000 raised.
