JUST because you’re watching your waistline doesn’t mean you can’t join in the Big Tynedale Bake.

A slimming club in Hexham has thrown its weight behind the Tynedale Hospice at Home fund-raiser and proved you can still eat cake and stay trim.

Members of Caroline Elsom-Mekin’s Slimming World group at Hexham Community Centre produced a table full of low- fat tempting treats.

Denis Denham, who lost two stone in three months eight years ago and has managed to keep it off, brought along homemade oat pancakes while Anne McAuslan, who has lost just over four stone, brought an apple Betty. Anne is doing her fourth Great North Run this year in aid of the hospice.

Caroline said: “When the hospice approached me about getting involved in the Big Tynedale Bake I jumped at the chance. Doing our own version of the Big Tynedale Bake was a quirky idea and it’s great to be able to get our members involved, and we’re delighted to be supporting such a worthwhile cause.”

Tynedale Hospice at Home launched its annual Big Tynedale Bake earlier in the summer and has been encouraging people across the area to host bake sales, afternoon teas, coffee mornings and other baking-related activities to raise £10,000 to support its services.

Cathy Bates, community fund-raiser for the hospice, said: “This is an absolutely brilliant idea. So many people love to eat cake but are watching their weight so this is the ideal solution. There’s no excuse not to get involved – even the slimmers among you!

“We need to raise over £800,000 a year to run our services and nine per cent must be raised through voluntary giving and charitable donations. Our Big Bake campaign is a vital part of our fund-raising calendar and any money raised will make a real difference to the people who use our services.

“Whether you’re part of a community group, school, a local business, or an individual wanting to host something for friends and family, we’re appealing to everyone to get involved. We can supply you with our Big Tynedale Bake Fundraising Pack which includes everything you need to stage a great event.”
