STUDENTS at Dilston College, near Corbridge, came top of the class at Hexhamshire Leek Club’s annual show on Saturday.

Their winning leeks, measuring 192.49 cu ins, were benched by club member Alison Lee, a land-based studies tutor at the college.

“Alison is a great supporter of the show and brings along an awful lot of entries on behalf of the students every year,” said club secretary, John Henderson.

This year’s show, held at Whitley Chapel Village Hall was a bumper event, with 54 pairs of leeks, 541 exhibits and 102 children’s entries.

Youngsters from Whitley Chapel First School were well represented, with dozens of entries in the 14 children’s classes, which are tailored to fit in with their work each year.

“We work out the classes based on discussions with the school and any uncollected prize money on the day is donated to school funds,” explained John.

The day ended with a raffle, auction and trophy presentation.
