COUNCIL officials are calling on help from the public to crack down on anti-social behaviour in Hexham Parks.

The Sele, Hexham House gardens and the Abbey Grounds have been the source of a spike in reports of damage and disorder in recent months – so much so that CCTV is now being installed.

Northumberland County and Hexham Town councils have joined forces with Northumbria Police to tackle the problem.

Recent months have seen an increase in anti-social behaviour in the park, including damage to historic monuments, destruction of conservation work and continued vandalism to the play area.

Members of Hexham House Bowling Club have previously spoken out about the issue after seating and the club house was damaged, and the bowling green left littered with stones.

John Riddle, cabinet member for planning, housing and resilience at the council, said: “Hexham Parks is a fantastic, picturesque place for everyone to enjoy and we wish this to continue, so to see the effects of anti-social behaviour is devastating.

“The council is committed to working with members of the public and Northumbria Police to combat anti-social behaviour and stop the destruction of the Hexham Parks, ensuring we continue to keep the beauty and heritage of the area.

“We urge any park users who witness anti-social behaviour to contact either Northumberland Council on (0345) 600 6400 or Northumbria Police on 101 who can then take further action.”

Alongside this there will be greater police patrols of the park and CCTV will also be installed within the park grounds.

Northumbria Police are warning those committing damaging offences to the park that they will be taking action against them.
