CONTROVERSIAL plans to extend a caravan park near Hexham will now include an additional site entrance and access route.

In June, Blue Sky Resorts was given the go-ahead to extend the Heathergate Country Park at Lowgate, in a scheme which could see 39 static caravans added to green belt land.

This week a further application, for a temporary entrance and access route, was approved by Northumberland County Council.

The authority’s Tynedale Local Area Council met in Hexham on Tuesday, and members voted in favour of the application, despite objections from caravan park residents, and Hexham Town Council.

Seven members of the local area council voted in favour of the proposal, with four against.

Blue Sky Resorts said the new access would be in addition to the site’s existing entrance, and that it would provide vehicular access for a 12-month period, during the construction stage of the park’s extension.

Objectors said the proposed access route would be over green belt land and claimed an additional entrance was unnecessary.

Coun. Cath Homer, who voted against the proposal, said residents of the caravan park were concerned that the temporary entrance would eventually be made permanent.
