County councillor for Hexham West, Derek Kennedy, said cars parked near the supermarket on West Road were causing problems for pedestrians and obstructing the view of vehicles entering and exiting the supermarket’s car park.
“I was one of the main advocates for the Co-op coming to the west end of Hexham and it has been a huge success,” said Coun. Kennedy.
“However I have been approached by a number of local people highlighting that some drivers are parking on the pavement rather than using the car park.
“This has caused problems for pedestrians and for those drivers exiting the car park to join the busy West Road.”
Highways officials have drawn up a proposal which would see no waiting at any time restrictions – or double yellow lines – introduced on both sides of West Road near the Co-op.
The bus stops on both sides of the road would also be moved slightly as part of the plan.
A consultation exercise about the proposal closed last week.
Coun. Kennedy added: “This will help to keep this busy area safer.”
It follows a consultation with residents of Cockshaw and Cockshaw Court over the introduction of double yellow lines there, which were approved by Northumberland County Council in February.
There, concerns were raised by local people about vehicles parking on a narrow section of Cockshaw and around the junction of Cockshaw Court, causing an obstruction. The Traffic Regulation Order came into force on September 18 and double yellow lines have now been introduced.
