POLICE are urging vigilance against bogus workmen after an elderly Hexham resident was left out of pocket.

Northumbria Police have issued a warning following an incident where it is suspected that an elderly resident was overcharged for work.

At around 10am on Tuesday, April 26 the resident answered the door to a man offering to carry out roofing repair work.

A price was agreed and the work was carried out at the property, on Causey Park, Hexham.

The same man returned the following morning, at around 9.30am, claiming that more money was needed for additional work.

He told the resident the repairs would cost £3,500 and money was handed over.

However, the man did not return to carry out the additional work.

The man was with another male and they were driving a white mid-size van with a square back.

Police are appealing for help to trace the men and the van involved.

Neighbourhood Inspector, Kevin Oates, said: "We're keen to speak to anyone with further information about this incident and I'd appeal for anyone who has been approached in a similar way to get in touch with police as soon as possible.

"It's a timely reminder for people to be vigilant. Never agree to work being done by those who cold call at your home or approach you in the street. Never agree to have work completed on the spot.

"And when agreeing for work to be done by a company, ensure you get a written quotation and ask for identification and contact details for the company. Any reputable business will be more than happy to accommodate.

"I would ask for everyone to pass this warning on to the elderly, whether you are a carer, a relative or a neighbour. If you are in any doubt or suspicious, contact police straight away so we can carry out inquiries."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 469 11/04/15, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
