A CORONER has commenced an investigation into the death of a Hexham woman who was found on Tyne Green.

The body of Catherine Alice Gundrey (40) of Spittal Terrace was found by a member of the public at 8.30am on Monday on the banks of a burn which runs behind the club house at Tynedale Golf Club.

Police were called to the scene, which was cordoned off while investigations were carried out.

Although the cause of death is yet to be confirmed, police say there are no suspicious circumstances and South Northumberland coroner, Eric Armstrong, confirmed that a post mortem was due to be carried out yesterday.

Catherine, who was known by her middle name Alice, worked at Hexham General Hospital as a nurse practitioner in the urgent care department.

Hospital matron Kim Minnis said: “Alice was an extremely popular member of the hospital team and colleagues are shocked and stunned by the news. She was a much-loved and well-respected nurse who always put her patients first and our thoughts and sympathies are with her family at this difficult time.”
