THE baking skills of people supported by an Acomb-based charity are being used to fuel commuters in Tynedale.

Adults with additional needs who work with Daybreak have taken control of the refreshments kiosk at Hexham Railway Station this half term.

Serving up their own homemade pies, quiches and cakes to passengers, along with hot and cold drinks, the Daybreak team hope the chance to run the kiosk in school holidays will give them a chance to build a small business.

The charity, which works with people aged 18 and over with learning disabilities, is also planning to run the Whistle Stop refreshment stand during the Easter holidays.

The service will complement what is already being offered during term time by Cambian Dilston College, near Corbridge, which allows staff to support students in gaining vital work experience.

Development manager of Daybreak Adam Bird said: “We have three hubs in the North-East, one of which is in Acomb, where we have a fully- functioning bakery.

“All the goods we produce are made by the adults we support and this is a great opportunity for the charity.

“We’ve had a really positive response from customers.

“Also, it gives the people we work with the chance to develop their communication and interpersonal skills in a way which could not otherwise be taught.”

Whether it’s to gain work experience, perfect independent travelling skills or secure paid employment, Daybreak works with individuals to draw up person-centred plans to help them to achieve their goals.

“Daybreak is currently re-branding and will be changing its name to Journey,” explained Adam.

“We want to help people on their journey to a good life, whatever that looks like.”

John Gillott, partnership officer for the Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership, said: “The students from Dilston have been with us for five or six years now and have done a wonderful job.

“It allows students to gain valuable work experience, although it has always been difficult in the school holidays.

“That is where Daybreak is stepping in to help out and, hopefully, fill those gaps.

“We’re really happy to have Daybreak on board and everybody should gain from the situation going forward.”
