CALLS from Tynedale’s own county councillors to re-instate public notices in the Hexham Courant have been ignored.

In March, members of Northumberland County Council’s west area committee gave their unanimous support to a campaign calling for the return of statutory notices to Hexham Courant .

Councillors from across the district spoke out against the decision, branding it ‘appalling’.

The officially recorded minutes of the meeting state that the west area committee resolved to oppose the decision made by the administration and request the notices be reinstated.

Northumberland County Council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday was set to consider feedback from recent area committee meetings.

However, the minutes from all meetings were approved without comment or discussion.

County councillor for Hexham West, Derek Kennedy was one of the councillors who spoke out against the removal of notices.

Coun. Kennedy has also submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, asking for the release of all documents related to the decision from the last 12 months.

The request was submitted on March 9, but Coun. Kennedy has yet to receive a response.

He said: “It’s hugely disappointing that all of the councillors who supported that motion in the west of the county have been ignored. I am desperate to see a response to my FOI because at the moment we just don’t know what actually happened.”

A spokesman for Northumberland County Council said: “The minutes were noted by cabinet. However this was not a decision made by the administration and the matter has been passed to the chief executive.”
