The North East Ambulance Service said it was called to the incident involving a cow by the B6305 at 7.35am on Wednesday.
Two ambulance crews and the Great North Air Ambulance were sent to assist.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service said the man had been trampled by the cow and had sustained leg and chest injuries.
He was treated on the scene by a doctor and paramedic team before being airlifted to the RVI in Newcastle.
The man, who is believed to be in his 50s, was said to be in a stable condition on arrival.
