TWO men have been arrested following an incident in Haltwhistle in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police said a car collided with a number of pedestrians in the area of Lanty's Lonnen at shortly before 1am.

They said the incident followed a verbal altercation some time earlier.

Two people were taken to hospital with injuries descibed as non-serious, and have since been released.

Police said that following the collision, the car involved left the scene but was later recovered in Hexham.

Two men were arrested at Newcastle's Central Station in connection with the incident.

Chief Inspector Craig Metcalfe said: "This was no doubt a distressing incident that followed an enjoyable community event of the Haltwhistle Carnival.

"Our extensive enquiries are ongoing and we are continuing with efforts to progress CCTV, and are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. "We have extra neighbourhood officers on patrol in the area to reassure local residents and visitors to the area."
