POLICE have vowed to address concerns over drugs in Haltwhistle.

Neighbourhood inspector Pam Bridges attended a meeting of Haltwhistle Town Council on Monday, January 9.

Members said drug dealing and misuse were happening in the area, and called for police intervention.

Insp. Bridges said she was aware of their concerns, but did not believe drugs were a major issue in the town.

She said: “I am aware that there are concerns about drugs, and drugs can have devastating consequences.

“In Haltwhistle, drugs are no more of an issue than any other policing issue, but we take these concerns very seriously and will do everything possible to crack down on any wrongdoing or misuse of drugs.

“It’s absolutely vital that anyone who has any information or has suspicions about drugs gets in touch with our neighbourhood team.”

Insp. Bridges, who was appointed as neighbourhood inspector for Tynedale in October last year, outlined the police’s priorities for Haltwhistle.

She added: “There’s a focus on preventing burglaries and preventing seasonal crime.

“This is a rural area and I have been impressed at the community spirit I have seen in Haltwhistle.”

Insp. Bridges also heard concerns from councillors about the 101 non-emergency telephone number.

She added: “It’s important that I hear the views of the public because feedback can be used to improve services such as 101.”
